Guardianship/conservatorship law is designed to "guard" incompetent people, "conserve" their assets, and "protect" the taxpaying public from the ward becoming a public charge. Over the years, the law has been misused, misapplied, or even manipulated to unjustly enrich court-appointed fiduciaries at the expense of and to the detriment of the very people they are court-appointed to protect. Women in Design (WiD) and Latin GSD, in collaboration with the Department of Landscape Architecture, present “Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency.” This symposium will provide an opportunity to debate the current and future state of landscape architecture in Latin America. Latin America is formed by a diverse set of territories, offering both challenges and opportunities to the landscape discipline. This symposium brings together professionals from several countries to discuss the complex social, political, and environmental realities engaged in their work. From the creation of ecological corridors in Bogota to urbanization in the Galapagos Islands, these designers interpret landscape through a range of lenses that include urbanism, architecture...

Modern time wonder Brasilia in Brazil. Brasilia is Brazil’s capital city and was constructed in the nineteen fifties in futuristic style, a veritable playground for both planners and architects and also a considerable challenge for both builders and civil engineers. The general idea had been to transform what could have been fifty years of building work into just five, but they actually achieved it in just four! Brasilia was recognised as a symbol of outstanding design and in 1987 it was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Congresso Nacional is the city’s most famous building complex, Oscar Niemeyer’s personal masterpiece, with a dome and bowl linked by two towers and corridors with photo galleries and countless government offices that form a mighty centre of administrative...

On his way to Paraguay in October 2012 Doug Fruitarky takes the tourist bus tour along the architectural 'highlights' in the geometrical, desolate concrete landscape of Brazil's capital Brasilia. The somewhat bland video images are made more bearable by the application of video effects and faster pace. Nevertheless had a good time there.

The Brasilia Cathedral, also known as the "Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida", is a grandiose Roman Catholic cathedral which has been serving as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília since it was first dedicated on May 31, 1970. Brasilia Cathedral was built by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and was the first ever monument to have been built in Brasilia. Joaquim Cardozo was the prime engineer of Brasilia Cathedral project. Whilst the cornerstone was laid on September 12, 1958, Brasilia Cathedral reached its first phase of completion on April 21, 1960, and Brasilia Cathedral was opened to public on May 31st, 1970. What remains of these ideals? Built for 500,000 inhabitants, it is now home to three million. Brasilia is bursting at the seams and is now the capital of a country shaken by social change and a deep crisis of confidence in its political class. Built in just a thousand days, Brasilia was the brainchild of President Juscelino Kubitschek. The city was supposed to attract economic development to the centre of the country, far from the coastal cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. But more than that, Brasilia represente...
São Paulo, one of the world’s most populated cities, is Brazil’s exciting hub of business, culture, creativity and hospitality. ‘Sampa’ was founded in 1554, at the spot of the historic Pátio do Colégio. Two beautiful historic buildings have been transformed into Cultural Centers: The Banco do Brazil and the Júlio Prestes Train Station. While the city’s most esteemed museums are the São Paulo Museum of Art, on the famous Avenida Paulista, and the Pinacoteca do Estado. The Viaduto Santa Ifigenia, an art nouveau bridge, leads pedestrians to the ornate Municipal Theatre, with its impressive Sala São Paulo concert hall. Don’t miss Ibirapuera Park, which is home to ...
